Changes to our programs
The Faculty of Science is committed to continuously reviewing our programs, plans and courses, so you’ll be equipped with the skills and expertise to succeed in your career.
You can find information about any changes to your program by clicking the program-specific links below. For many students there is no change to your current study plan. For some students, there may be a choice to retain your existing study plan or move to the revised 2021 program structure.
Changes to First Year Biology courses
From 2026, the new course 'BIOL1050 Organisms: Interactions and Functions' will replace 'BIOL1030 Biodiversity and the Environment' and 'BIOL1040 Cells to Organisms' in Faculty of Science programs (degrees) and plans (minors, majors, and extended majors).
A new course, 'BIOL1000: Introductory Biology' will also be introduced for students who have not completed QLD Senior Biology (or equivalent). You cannot enrol in this course if you have received a passing grade in another Level 1 BIOL-coded course.
How will this impact me?
- If you require one of BIOL1030 or BIOL1040 for your program or plan, and have not already completed (or are not enrolled to complete) the required course, you should take BIOL1050 instead.
- If you require both BIOL1030 and BIOL1040, and have not completed (or are not enrolled to complete) one of these courses, you should take BIOL1050 instead.
- If you require both BIOL1030 and BIOL1040, and have not completed (or are not enrolled to complete) either of these courses, you should complete BIOL1050 and any course of your choice from your program list instead.
- If none of the above apply to you, follow your program rules as normal.
Note: you cannot enrol in BIOL1050 if you have already completed both BIOL1030 and BIOL1040.
Additional advice for students planning to take BIOL2010, BIOL2204 or BIOL2205 in 2026.
If you wish to take 'BIOL2010 Ecology', 'BIOL2204 Zoology', or 'BIOL2205 Insect Science' in 2026, and have not yet completed prerequisite course BIOL1030:
- BIOL2010: Enrol as normal. For 2026 only, the course coordinator will bridge content gaps for students entering without BIOL1030 or BIOL1050.
- BIOL2204/2205: Enrol in BIOL1050 in Semester 2 2026 (concurrently with BIOL2204/2205). It is recommended that you also enrol in BIOL1000 in Semester 1 2026; for 2026 only you may enrol even if you have completed QLD Senior Biology (or equivalent), or received a passing grade in another Level 1 BIOL-coded course.
Note: these arrangements apply for 2026 only. From 2027, students are expected to complete the prerequisites for these courses as listed.
Where can I get support?
Check the online study planners for your program for more information and how BIOL1000 and BIOL1050 may fit into your plan.
