What will I study?

You will specialise in one of four key areas of environmental science - Earth Resources; Ecology; Molecular and Microbial Science; and Natural Resource Science. In each area you will study core and advanced science and regulatory topics, participate in environmental science field trips and complete a substantial research project in either an environmental impact assessment or an environmental audit.

  • Earth Resources Major is concerned with the physical environment. Students develop expertise in the assessment of impacts of geological phenomena and of activities related to the extraction and use of the earth's resources. Graduates from this field will find employment opportunities as: - specialists in geochemical site assessment; specialists in the remediation of contaminated sites; specialists in groundwater quality and supply; managers of chemicals in the environment; and environmental consultants

  1. Students without Queensland Senior Chemistry should complete CHEM1090 before taking any other chemistry course. 

Students choose either the Part B or Part H option for their final year. Part B option will grant a Bachelor Degree with Pass and Part H option will grant a Bachelor Degree with Honours. The latter, will involve Research works completion as part of the awarding requirement.

Graduates from this program find employment in: departments of state and federal government; universities; industrial organisations; or commercial consultancies dealing with environmental monitoring, impact assessment and environmental management. Monitoring work may be associated with licence compliance requirements or initiatives such as green production or greenhouse challenge policies. Graduates are likely to be engaged on environmental impact studies for urban, industrial and rural development of animal feedlots, abattoirs, mining and mineral processing operations, industrial developments, facilities in or bordering on national parks, or residential or agricultural developments adjacent to areas of environmental value.  Students who perform well at honours level may choose a research-related career path by entering a higher-degree program.

Graduates may be eligible for membership with the following professional bodies:

  • Australian Society of Soil Science
  • Environment Institute of Australia

While this degree may be accredited by an official industry accreditation body in Australia, completion of the degree may not result in graduates receiving automatic accreditation. Please contact the relevant registration body for details of any conditions for accreditation.
