Study Planner Information

What will I study?

A large component of the education of a geoscience student involves laboratory and practical activities, and field work. There will be ample opportunities for vacation work in the mining industry in your second and third years, and this will immensely enrich your university education and your personal experience. The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences has a very strong research record and excellent links with industry. The School's multicultural staff have strong collaborations with the best geoscience institutions across the five continents. Students interested in a research career will have access to some of the most advanced research laboratories in the country.
There are three recommended study plans in the BSc Geological Sciences Major:

Minerals and Energy

This area provides excellent undergraduate training for the professional geologist in the exploration and mining industries, and for students who wish to pursue further postgraduate education. The BSc Honours program in geology is a professionally recognised qualification.

Environment and Marine

This field provides a broad training for students interested in aspects of  Earth systems science, such as environmental geosciences, marine geology, climate change, hydrogeology, and geochemistry. Students will acquire the ability to look at the big picture. Given the importance of water resources and of the marine environment for Australia’s future, particular emphasis will be placed on marine geology and on coastal processes.

Exploration Geophysics

The exploration geophysics plan is intended primarily for students who wish to pursue careers as professional geophysicists, working for major resource and engineering companies, international geophysical contractors, and government or research organisations. Geophysics is a dynamic and challenging profession, integrating diverse skills including mathematics, geology, physics, computing and instrumentation. It suits people who enjoy intellectual variety, problem solving, quantitative analysis, and the outdoors. The plan given here allows students to combine Geological Sciences with Mathematics and is recommended as the ideal undergraduate plan for capable students intending to become exploration geophysicists. For a professionally recognised qualification, this undergraduate plan would normally be followed by BSc Hons (Exploration Geophysics) or MMinRes (Exploration). Geological Sciences is available as a single or extended major.

  1. MATH1050 is not available for students with a High Achievement or higher in Senior Maths C.

  2. Available in Semester 1 and 2.

  3. Students who have not completed high school physics should take PHYS1171 instead

  4. ERTH1501 will be credited as a non-BSc elective towards the program. Students in a dual degree cannot enrol into this course for credit.

  5. Students without Queensland Senior Chemistry should complete CHEM1090 before taking any other chemistry course.
