Study Planner Information

What will I study?

Geographical Science students have the option to choose one of the following areas of specialisation within the major:

Biogeography and Landscape Ecology

Accelerating loss of biodiversity driven by continued population growth, land use change, climate change and unstainable exploitation of natural resources is one of the greatest threats the World faces. Students that follow this study plan develop understanding of the spatial and temporal variability in flora and fauna, and the causes of change in their abundance and distribution. They will develop techniques through participation in laboratory and field work exercises to measure and monitor change in flora and fauna and to reconstruct past records of change from geologic archives including lake sediments.  The study plan prepares students for further study and research in landscape ecology or careers in the areas of conservation and natural resource management.

Climatology

Students who follow the Climatology study plan develop an understanding of weather and climate, from the global scale down to the local scale. They will study the driving forces behind weather including land surface – atmosphere energy exchanges over terrestrial, marine and coastal locations. With this knowledge students will investigate the formation of different weather systems ranging from sea breezes to tropical cyclones, the causes of climate variability and change and impacts. Students following this study plan are encouraged to consider enrolment in supporting courses in mathematics and remote sensing.  Climatology is taught by staff involved in atmospheric science and climate change research in Australia, Canada, Asia and the Antarctic. Students learn to apply knowledge of weather and climate to a range of contemporary issues and will be well placed to face the hottest of topics in the 21st Century.  Career opportunities include forecasting and working in industries as diverse of agriculture, energy production, mining and education.

Earth Systems Science

Earth Systems Science focuses on developing knowledge and understanding of the interactions that occur between Earth systems including the hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere and society. Students learn how these systems function and change through time in response to both natural and human induced change such as global warming and population growth. Courses in this area of study include significant hands-on experiences through laboratory programs and field trips where students test theory against the complexities of the real-world. These activities provide opportunities to gain experience in contemporary environmental monitoring using state-of-the-art equipment and reporting. Study in Earth Systems Science prepares students for the many challenges of global change in the 21st Century and a wide variety of career paths.

Geographical Information Science

Monitoring global environmental change underpins our ability to effectively manage our environment at a time of unprecedented change. Students following this study plan learn how to use remote sensing, geographic information systems and spatial analysis and modelling tools to map, measure, and model processes and changes in natural and built environments from local to global scales. This is done using global positioning systems, airborne and satellite imaging systems, and software for collecting, analysing and modelling spatial information. The core geographic theories are combined with mathematical knowledge and spatial analysis techniques to build the skills necessary to map, monitor and model environmental change. This includes understanding how current environmental problems are being understood, modelled and managed – for example forest-vegetation clearing, long-term rainfall variations, assessment of natural resource management effects and tracking cyclones and severe storms. Students who complete this study plan will have the skills necessary to work as a spatial information science professional or as an environmental scientist, physical or human geographer with specific skills in spatial information collection, analysis and modelling.

Hydrology and Geomorphology

As population growth and climate change converge, understanding our freshwater resources and natural and societal influences upon them is critical. Additional impact from mining, agriculture, land use and climate change will be in high demand as society seeks to maintain access to sustainable supplies of good quality freshwater. Students following this study plan will develop an understanding and build knowledge of hydrological systems and their sustainable use. They will develop skills in measurement and monitoring of hydrological and geomorphic systems and gain understanding of the influence of weather and climate on freshwater systems and water supply. Interactions with other disciplines such as biology and earth science will also be emphasised, and the latest tools and techniques used from the global to molecular scale will be covered. The study plan encourages students to develop complementary statistical and analytical skills that will enable students to better interpret information on water quantity and quality, as well as undertake research on hydrological and geomorphic systems.

Marine and Coastal Systems

Students that follow this study plan develop understanding of marine and coastal systems and their management. In their first year students develop a broad appreciation of global environmental issues and build skills in mathematics and geographical and information data analysis. They then develop knowledge of marine and coastal systems in a physical science context, skills in measurement and monitoring of these systems, and then integrate this knowledge with sustainable management in courses at third year. Students following this study plan will have opportunities to undertake laboratory and field work in different locations including Moreton Bay and Heron Island including their own research.  

Society and the Environment

With the Earth’s population set to grow further from 7 billion to more than 9 billion in the next 50 years, humans will influence and be influenced by the environment more than ever before. The World will need professionals who are able to monitor and assess changes in the environment. Students who follow this study plan will develop understanding and skills of how societies and the environment interact. A key theme is sustainability and sustainable practice. Students will participate in a wide range of learning activities that will prepare them for employment in a diverse range of professions, from state and federal government agencies to consultancy companies.
